How a Twist of Fate Led to Life-Saving Surgery

Last year, Joseph LaVista underwent quadruple bypass surgery at UF Health Flagler Hospital, a procedure that not only saved his life but also prevented a major heart attack known as a STEMI (ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction). Also referred to as a “widowmaker heart attack,” this type of heart attack is caused by a complete blockage of the largest artery in the heart. Despite regular checkups, LaVista had no idea he was at such high risk. A series of fortunate events, plus the right medical team, ultimately made all the difference.

Thirty years ago, LaVista experienced a heart attack, which prompted regular visits with a cardiologist in his hometown of Weston, FL. For years he received consistently positive results from routine stress tests.

However, after relocating to Palm Coast, more than four hours away from his longtime doctor, he found a new, local cardiologist. Though he appreciated the new provider, he casually mentioned to his friend, Jimmy Van Ingen, that he was interested in getting a second opinion. The conversation proved pivotal.

Van Ingen recommended another physician who quickly identified serious arterial blockages that had previously been undetected. The findings surprised LaVista and his family.

He was quickly referred to Derek D. Muehrcke, M.D. and David R. Grech, M.D. Together they developed a plan to rectify the issues with his heart.

“I experienced exceptional care from the team, whose attentiveness and reassurance made a significant difference before and after the surgery,” LaVista said.

His daughter, Jamie LaVista, was moved by the compassion of the entire medical team at UF Health Flagler Hospital. She praised the kindness of the nurses, physician assistant William Shimp and doctors who listened to her dad’s concerns and went the extra mile to alleviate his anxiety about the quadruple bypass procedure.

LaVista’s story is a reminder of the importance of regular health check-ups, particularly for those with a history of heart conditions. Regular stress tests and trusting your instincts can be lifesaving. Staying proactive empowers people to take control of their health and identify warning signs early.

“Reflecting on everything, it’s incredible how it all came together—from that casual chat with his friend to discovering the right medical team; every element helped with his improved health journey,” Jamie noted.

Now, LaVista feels rejuvenated. With increased energy and less fatigue, he has even planned a seven-day cruise this summer.
