34 months. 146 weeks. 1,021 days. 24,500 hours. This is how long Sheri Fulkerson has been volunteering at Flagler Hospital. In 2001, Sheri experienced an asthma-induced episode which kept her out of work, causing her to lose her insurance. The medical event brought her to Flagler Hospital in a medically induced coma for more than a week, then after they discharged her, the medical event brought her back to the hospital two more separate visits after that. Finding herself without insurance or a way to pay for her health care, Flagler Hospital covered Sheri's hospital bill. Sheri says she decided that day to be a volunteer and give back to the hospital that gave her so much.
Fast forward 20 years and, Sheri is still giving back to Flagler Hospital and has built a lot of great relationships. "I come to Flagler Hospital and I get to see all my friends. They’re all volunteering here or working here, it's just perfect," says Sheri.
Sheri says she plans on volunteering at Flagler Hospital until she can't anymore, and she strongly encourages others to join her. "I feel if you can give back to your community, do so," Sheri says, "Join the volunteer family at Flagler Hospital."
